the intern’s guide – day one
by haley sherif
For the last several months as I waited, somewhat anxiously I may add, for my internship at the Daily Dan to begin, I had rolling images of Anne Hathaway in the Devil Wears Prada running around New York flustered and panic stricken juggling numerous cups of coffee, blackberry tucked on her ear, and taking notes, all while balancing on heels. Though I had a bit of an advantage as a mutual friend had begun her internship here three weeks prior to my start date, I still didn’t know what would be asked of me or how I would fit in.
Proper Attire ~ I’m obsessed with fashion so when it comes to picking office wear it’s especially important for me to dress appropriately. I want to keep a young vibe to the look, not too serious, but also not too casual. To strike the perfect balance is easy once you figure out what your work’s attire is usually like. I knew that the Dan, from the interview I had at the office back in March, was casual chic. I layered a Calypso long dress with a white Equipment blouse and a Rag and Bone jean and leather jacket to keep me warm from the blasting AC in the office. Layers are a definite must! Because the weather called for t-storms all day I took an umbrella with me along with a Celine black tote (obsessed, obsessed, obssesed).
What inspired this summer feature was what my actual day one experience was like, to sum it up in three words, not too shabby! I started the morning off by putting media kits together, learning how to bind books something that will help me in whatever job I later choose. I spent the next few hours becoming familiar with past issues of the Dan and Front Row, going out for a quick lunch break with two other interns, and getting adjusted to the office space. I’m glad to say that I now have much more realistic image of what it’s like to work at a fashion office and though it varies from place to place, I’ll take it day by day. (On a side note, I haven’t had to do a coffee run yet, but if I do I’ll be doing so in flats). Check back on Friday and Saturday for day two and three of the intern’s guide, xo.
