THE FASHION DISH

home sweet home

I love the feeling of coming home. While I’ve been traveling since I was little I’ve always found a new appreciation for home every time I come back to New York. There’s truly no where like it in the world, the ease, the fun stores, and the delicious food are just three of the reasons I love calling the city that never sleeps home. But, I also love the other things about it. The greater sense of community, the smell of summer that wafts through my window several weeks before the season actually changes, and the fact that the majority of my friends live here too.

I love Nick’s class at Soul Cycle!

While last night was all dedicated to unpacking, going through the mail, and finally going to bed, this morning I’m full of energy. I haven’t taken a Soul Cycle class since the summer because I just haven’t found the time, but there’s no better thing to beat the travel blues than an early morning class that really pushes me to my limit. It was great to be back on the bike and now exciting to have a full day ahead.

I really want to eat here tonight! I’ve heard good things.

I have several errands to run as well as going to get more color done at Valery Josephs! I want to go blonder and spring seems to be a good time to do so. Tonight I’m having dinner with a girlfriend I haven’t seen in awhile and I’m looking forward to relaxing with good friends, stories, and food, xo.

short and sweet

I love a cute mini dress! I don’t like anything too revealing, but a little skin never killed anyone. I’m obsessed with a navy blue dress from Scoop I purchased last summer and while I’ve worn it throughout the winter with tights, a knit, and boots I couldn’t wait to debut it in the warmer weather. Last night was the perfect chance.

To get my look start with a mini dress that’s one color, pick one with interesting detailing like Calypso’s Tilly Dupioni Dress

I decided to wear the dress, with some detailing at the neck, with black sandals and fun accessories. Though the look had a darker color palette to it I balanced it out with colorful bracelets. It’s been chilly in the evenings in Cabo, so I’ve been carrying my Theory white knit everywhere.

Next, add a sandal, I choose black, but these silver Calypso sandals work well too

Though it’s not a cardigan it’s a fun length, longer in the back and shorter in the front, and made from the ideal material, not too warm, but ideal for a summer breeze.  This look is a favorite, but I can’t wait to showcase one last Mexico look tonight! It’s another beautiful day in paradise and I can’t wait to spend it by the pool, catching up on a new issue of Bazaar, xo

Lastly, add some colorful, fun accessories, like this statement necklace from Calypso and you’re done!

the white jean snafu

I’ve always been one to regard the tradition white jean “rule” with the standard, wear white sometime in June, but not before. However, I seem to always have a pair of white jeans packed when on holiday and never know if it’s appropriate to whip them out, pair them with a blouse and sandals, and be done with it. Well, I’ve solved the snafu with the help of the chic Kelly Bensimon.

The other afternoon while browsing twitter, as a side note, twitter seems to be a focal point of the fashion dish in recent weeks what with the color question from Samantha Yanks a few weeks back and what not, I came across Kelly who had posted a picture of herself looking lovely in white jeans, blouse, and sweater while visiting DC. However, this outfit left a follower disgruntled enough to write the look, predominately the white jeans, as a fashion fail.

Kelly responded with these tried and true words, truly making me think and ultimately adjusting my perspective on the whole white jean snafu – “I wear what I love always. You should too.” There it is. We call ourselves individuals and we show that individuality through what we choose to wear, but then come across situations like these where we still hold on to ancient “rules” like ‘no white before Labor Day’. Why bother because the fantastic thing about fashion is that there aren’t rules and that’s how it should be.

Thanks to Kelly  I rocked white jeans last night with a favorite Joie tank and black Givenchy sandals. The moral of the anecdote is simple; wear what you want, be comfortable, and break “the rules” because that’s what fashion is for, no rules et al, xo

boho chic

I arrived in Cabo yesterday afternoon and after a delicious lunch we headed for the pool. I couldn’t wait to dress up for dinner though! A few weeks ago I purchased a fantastic pink maxi skirt that I love at Ludivine boutique. From the material to the color it’s one of my favorite items now in my warm weather wardrobe.

I knew I wanted to wear it right away, but I wasn’t exactly sure how I wanted to style it. I tried a few options and finally settled for a fun blue, red, and white patterned Joie tank, three simple gold bands, and a gold pair of Jack Rogers. Though I had just worn the tank in Colorado with J.Brands and a warm knit I couldn’t wait to rock the versatile top this time with a skirt.

I had an obsession with maxi skirts last summer and purchased three, one black and two patterned, that I love and can’t wait to wear again soon. But, for now I love this new addition.

I made sure it didn’t look to tent like by making sure my top fell just at the waist of the skirt and balancing the outfit with a structured black YSL clutch, sandals, and simple bands. J’adore boho chic!

I’m enjoying another fun day pool side and I can’t wait to have an ice cold drink! xo

Next Stop Mexico

I can’t wait to see this

I can’t believe I’ve been in Colorado for entire week! It’s been fun to be out on the mountain snowboarding and eating a ton of delicious food, but I’m ready for the beach, the pool, and some relaxation. I haven’t been to Cabo in a few years, but from the sounds of it the crystal blue ocean and the warm temperatures are enough to make me look forward to it.

I can’t wait to wear this (bikini from Malia Mills)

My flight is really early this morning, but I can’t wait to have the whole day to sit by the pool, read, and take a run on the beach. I also can’t wait to debut some of my warmer weather outfits including fun sandals and a new maxi skirt I especially can’t wait to take for a spin. Keep your eyes peeled for outfit posts and updates to come.

a sweet surprise in Colorado

The delicious “It” bar, I love the eclectic flavors

I arrived late yesterday afternoon to Colorado and couldn’t have been more excited! I was definitely ready after a full day of travel and a very busy week to settle in. Since we’ve been coming to the Ritz in Colorado for almost ten years the staff here are more likely family and they always know how to make it a special vacation for us.

I was super excited when walking into my room to find almost the entire desk covered in Dylan’s Candy Bar chocolates and assorted sweets. I absolutely love Dylan’s and it’s a sweet reminder of home. I did nibble on one of the bars after dinner and it was delicious.

Once I unpacked and went for sushi for dinner,  I was in bed early and completely ready for sleep and that is after all what vacation is all about. I look forward to lots more fun on the mountain. Look out for more posts from Colorado!

Here’s to delicious treats,  xo

vacation time

It’s time at last for me to leave ol’ New York and set off for a two week vacation with my family. I can’t wait to visit my second home of Colorado. I love to sit by the fire, enjoy some sweet treats, and take a break for a breath of fresh air! We always tend to vacation somewhere warm as well as this time we’ll be going back to Cabo one of my favorite destinations. From the delicious food to the crystal blue water it’s the ideal haven from it all.

I love the travel pictures from old copies of Vogue

Though I’m usually good about efficient packing yesterday afternoon I was sleepy and couldn’t decide on anything, so before I swung into a full fledge panic about not being able to find matching socks I took a break and composed myself. I decided it would be easiest to focus on one destination at a time, starting with day time clothes and then transitioning to night. I made sure I had enough outfits to mix and match and left the accessories to do later once I was home from dinner so I had everything together. It’s immensely helpful to layout looks beforehand and it makes me look forward to actually wearing the clothes rather than knowing I’ve packed a bunch of things I won’t wear.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day fashion dish readers, xo

Haley visits Kansas City

brunch time

This past weekend I took my very first trip to Kansas City, Missouri where I visited my close friend Sam. I have never been to Missouri and had no idea what to expect! I knew it would cold over the weekend so I made sure to pack a variety of warm knits and my trusty Frye boots (which I received several compliments on!). I arrived late Friday afternoon and immediately stopped for a late lunch before we took a quick detour to a family affair and than went to a late movie – This Means War. I couldn’t wait to try some of Kansas City’s delicacies on Saturday and so I couldn’t have been more excited to have some very tradition BBQ, a beef sandwich to be exact and fries, for lunch. While I decided to be comfortable all weekend in leggings I made sure to switch up my knit.

new friends

I also, didn’t know what I would be in for when late that afternoon I accompanied Sam to her tattoo appointment! She didn’t just settle for her first, but also went for her second! I would not have been able to bear the pain, but she didn’t even shed a tear. I love that she choose two literature related tattoos – Scheherazade and Shake the Dust. I love them.  Afterwards we stopped for dinner – burgers and truffle fries. Yum.

On Sunday I went with Sam, her lovely friend, and her adorable mother to a delicious brunch place downtown. It sort of resembled Brooklyn in New York with its chilled out vibe and casual air, but the food was so delicious. I decided on an omelet with bacon and onions. Afterwards we took a quick stop at a eccentric store called It’s a Beautiful Day, which is filled with all kinds of knickknacks from records to incense before we headed to KC’s museum, the Nelson-Atkins. We saw a fantastic exhibition and strolled around the warm outdoor area.

My trip to visit Sam was so nice and I can’t wait to visit her soon! From the numerous coffee trips to new friends the weekend was a fantastic success.

dinner at the W

One of my new favorite places in Miami is the W Hotel. We went there for dinner and it was so much fun. Not only is the hotel so chic, but it has two of the most delicious restaurants, Mr. Chows and The Dutch. We went to The Dutch and had a fantastic time. From the seafood starter to the delicious pine nut pasta I had as an entree and finished off with pie and tea the experience was fantastic and I can’t wait to eat there soon (there’s one in Soho too!). Below are some snapshots from our visit to the W.

Here’s to a fantastic President’s Weekend, xo

Haley goes to Boston

I’m so excited that it’s finally Friday. Never have Rebecca Black’s lyrics been so appropriate – “It’s Friday, Friday!” It has been an insane week and a chaotic 24 hours. Yesterday afternoon I left New York headed for Boston, but later this afternoon I’m headed home. A very quick turn around, but I’m here to visit some friends, so that does make me very happy. I love Boston’s atmosphere, it has the city feel of New York, but in a lot of ways it tends to be a little more toned down. I love the incredible food and the beautiful square that my hotel room looks into. It’s such a treat to come.

Today is awfully chilly, so I’m between leggings and a Vince striped sweater with Frye boots or tights, a cute summer dress, layered with a warm Theory knit. Whichever I choose I’ll accessorize with my favorite new bracelets! My friend makes the bracelets above in support of ovarian cancer. I love the adorable skulls and buddahs, so cool and so chic.

Whether you’re home for the weekend or on the road may it be a fashionable one, xo
